Niall McVeigh Wins Gold In Turkey

Niall McVeigh returned to the winner’s podium in the 4th Turkish Para-Badminton International after capturing the Men’s Singles title in the Short Stature 6 class.

This win is just the fillip that the Irish No1 and former World and European Champion needed in his build-up to the Paralympics in 2020 and as he looks forward to the next competition in the para-badminton calendar, the FZ Forza Irish Para-Badminton International being staged at the National Sports Campus in Banchardstown from 20-24 June.

After losing out to the No3/4 seeded Malaysian Didin Taresoh in the quarter-final of the Dubai International 25-23 in the second set - though reaching the semi-final of the doubles with Taresoh and losing only to the eventual champions Coombs and Shephard - his performances in Turkey were impressive, failing to drop a single set.

He took only twenty minutes to see off  the Russian Alexander Mekhdiev 21-13 21-13 in his opening match and although Japan’s Yohei Hatakeyama made a real fight of it in the second set, Niall was to secure his second won 21-14 21-19.

Niall was in imperious form in his final two matches, beating Hector Jesus Salva Tunque in straight sets and clinched the Gold by beating Fabien Morat (France) 21-13 21-9.

In the Irish International in June Niall will, of course, be heading a strong Ireland squad including Stephen Halpin, Michael Smith and Chris Stewart.

Also in the draw will be Andrew Moorcroft who won a Bronze medal recently in the Spanish International in the Men’s Doubles when he partnered Scotland’s Robert Laing to reach the semi-final, losing out to the No2 seeds Chu Man Kai/Wong Chun Yim.

Emma Farnham who won a Bronze medal last year in the singles and was a semi-finalist in the Mixed Doubles SS6 will also be hoping to add to her collection of para-badminton medals.

Laura Lee Jenkins, a semi-finalist partnering Fiona Christie in the Wheelchair Women’s Doubles is in the Wheelchair disciplines and McVeigh will not only be competing in the Men’s Singles but teaming up with Carmen Giuliana Poveda Flores in the Mixed Doubles, thus renewing their partnership which saw them win Bronze in the World Championships in Ulsan, Korea back in November of last year.

In last year’s Irish International Niall knocked out former World Champion Andrew Martin in the quarter-final of the singles but lost to Krysten Coombs in straight sets so he will be keen to get his hands on his home title again this time round.
