As part of the Active School weeks 23rd to 27th of April I was invited to do coaching sessions in two different primary Schools in the Southeast.
Shanbogh N.S, New Ross Co. Wexford
"Shanbogh N.S is a small primary school of 22 kids age 4 to 12. A very enthusiastic bunch, some were quite shy and had never played or held a racquet before. We started with balloons demonstrating forehand and backhand grips before progressing onto shuttles, then introducing net shots and finally rallying with the older kids. By the end of two-hour session, they really came out of their shells, the teachers noted how some of the quieter more reserved kids participated very well. Overall worthwhile and positive experience for both myself and the kids alike".
St Colmcilles N.S Bigwood Mullinavat Co Kilkenny
Bigwood National School is a lovely small country school of 20 kids, ranging in age from four to twelve years of age.
"It was an enjoyable challenge for myself, there was a variety of different standards from complete beginners to medallists, I concentrated on the importance of correct forehand and backhand grip. The younger children loved practising hand to eye coordination with balloons, it was great fun. Meanwhile the more experienced kids enjoyed split step lunge and net shots, progressing onto shuttle drills and then finally to games, the teachers got involved and the School is now very keen to continue a badminton program. Overall very enjoyable and rewarding session".
