Five Quarterfinal places for Ireland after Day 2 of the Irish Open

After other great days play from the Irish players they have secured five spots in the quarterfinals taking place tomorrow in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.

The days play kicked off with a solid win from Sam and Chloe Magee in the mixed against the young Danish pair of Baskjaer/Kornum of Denmark. The pair tested Sam and Chloe but their experience shone through and they took that match. Thier second-round match later in the day saw them face off against the Scottish pair of Dunn/O'Donnell. Sam and Chloe breezed through the first game-winning 21-5. Their concentration dropped in the second and they lost it 18-21. After some nervy moments in the third, they came through winning that game 21-15 and clinching the match to secure the first Irish quarter-final.

Nhat Nguyen was also on top form through the day after coming from his recent first-place finish at the Welsh Open last week. He had an opening win against Soedjasa of New Zealand despite having been faulted a number of times for his service, he kept his focus and won comfortably 21-13 21-11. Later in the day, he came up against the tougher opponent and number 8 seed Matthew Carder of Scotland. There were some long rallies during the match but Nhat was physically stronger in most of these and came through winning the match in two games 21-11 21-15.

Also making it through to the quarter-final stages was Kate Frost and Moya Ryan. They got a walkover in their opening round and beat Bukovicski/Gonda of Hungary in their second round match to get through to tomorrow.

Sam and Joshua Magee had a good day of games and performed well. They looked strong against Ashton and Roe in their opening round and took the English pair down 23-21 21-14. Later in the day, they played their round of 16 match, where they came up against Suarez/Zapico of Spain. Joshua and Sam took the Spanish pair out with ease winning in two games 21-12 21-7 to make it into the quarterfinal stages of the event.

Nhat Nguyen also made the quarterfinals along with his partner Paul Reynolds in the men's doubles. They had three games matches all day long. The first against French pair Lovang/Villeger. Nhat and Paul had a good start against the pair winning the first 21-19. They lost focus and lost the second 12-21. They managed to recompose themselves to take the final game 21-17. They made the quarterfinal after winning a late match against Clare/King of England.

Many of the other Irish played well throughout the day winning their first round matches and losing out in the second round. Make sure to come down to the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena to support the players.
