The U15 competition had a large entry and there were some very competitive matches throughout the day on Saturday. On Sunday, the Boys Singles Final saw Michael Staunton battle bravely but in-form Peter McDonald was not to be denied and claimed the title in two sets.
In the Girls Singles Orla Flynn did well in bringing the match to three sets but Alexandra Troy prevailed to take the title in the third set.
The Boys Doubles saw the in-form pair of Daniel O'Meara and Sean-Patrick Laureta take the title from Michael Staunton and Jack Armstrong.
The Girls Doubles Final was very enjoyable to watch with Orla Flynn and Megan McLoughlin battling bravely but ultimately coming up just short against Kerry Fallon and Kim Feehily in three competitive sets.
The Mixed Doubles Final concluded the day's events and it saw Kim Feehily and Sean Patrick Laureta claim the title from Kerry Fallon and Peter McDonald.
The Boys Singles Plate was won by Enda Clogher, beating Christopher O'Donoghue. The Girls Singles Plate was won by Megan McLoughlin, beating Caoimhe McKeown.
A very big thank you to all the players who supported our tournament, and thanks to the parents who were there to support them.
The Munster U11/U15 Open 2016 takes place this coming weekend in the Sports Arena, University of Limerick.
A large entry will see players from all four provinces travelling to UL to compete.
The U11 competition has some familiar names, with Dylan Noble being the top boys seed and Siofra Flynn and Paige Woods being the no. 1 and no.
2 seeds respectively in the girls competition. With a good entry in both the girls' and boys' events there is sure to be some exciting matches throughout the day. The U11 competition will be run to its conclusion on Saturday October 8th.
The U15 competition will be an interesting one, with some of last year's prize-winners taking the step up to U17, and making way for a new crop of U15 players. Top seed and Munster player Daniel O'Meara is seeded to play Leinster's Evan Byrne in the Boys Singles Final but each must first overcome strong opposition with players like Michael Staunton and Peter McDonald in the mix. Top seed in the girls competition is Orla Flynn who has had a great start to the new season. She is seeded to play Munster's Alexandra Troy in the final, with Kerry Fallon and Kim Feehily heavily favoured to make at least the semi-final stages.
All in all, it looks like those that make their way to UL on Saturday and Sunday will see some great badminton.
While the semi-finals and finals of the U15 competition are taking place on Sunday October 9th, the senior players will be taking to the boards to compete in the Munster Senior Open, also being held in the UL Sports Arena. No doubt some fine badminton will be played in that competition also throughout the day and, hopefully, the juvenile players will get to watch some of the country's best senior players in action.
