Michelle Shochan made a strong return to Badminton taking Gold at the U15 Gold in Milton Keynes. After a long break for all juvenille badminton Michelle returned to competition in style as she secured the gold medal in the event held in June. Michelle followed this up by being selected for both the under 15 and under 17 Irish teams.

Nguyen impressive in Olympic debut

Twenty one year old Nhat Nguyen competed in his first Olympics at the 2020/21 Games in Tokyo. The Irish number one started with an impressive win over three time Olympian Niluka Karunaratne of Sri Lanka 21-16 21-14. In the final of group f Nhat lost out to World number ten Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 21-12 18-21 21-12. This was an impressive debut for Nhat who will now have his eyes firmly fixed towards the 2024 games in Paris France.

Cheung finishes eight in Europe

The Irish U17 team competed at the 2021 European U17 championships in Slovenia from the 3rd to the 12th of September. The team had some tough group matches against France, Slovenia and Scotland in the opening week of the competition. Despite the team not winning any of these matches they went into the individual competition in high spirits after some very good individual performances in the team games.

One of the players who stood out throughout the competition was Badminton Ireland Talenet group player Matthew Cheung. Matthew won 2 out of his 3 singles in the team event, the only match he lost in the team event was to the eventual winner Alex Lainer of France. In the individual event Matthew won three matches beating opposition from Poland (7 seed Mateusz Golas), Slovenia (Ziga Podgorsek) and Russia (13 seed Gleb Stepakov) on his way to the quarterfinal. In the quarterfinal Matthew Lost out to the number two seed Charles Fouyn of Belgium 14-21 21-13 21-17.

"Well done to the entire team who competed at the under 17 team championships. This was a tough event following a number of strict protocol to ensure the safety of all taking part. The team coaches, Michael O'Meara and Georgina Ward, did a fantastic job with the team. I was delighted to see Matthew Cheung compete so well. We have a Talent programme in place to support our young talented athletes with the goal of creating high level European and World results. Matthew showed how this support is worthwhile as he came so close to winning a medal for Ireland. I have no doubt this result will inspire our other young players in upcoming events"
