Irish Para Badminton Open 2021 Cancelled
Friday 2 April 2021
It is with regret that I have to announce that Badminton Ireland have decided in consultation with BWF to cancel the Irish Para Badminton Open 2021.
This announcement has come after many months of planning, which dates back to our preparations for the European Para Badminton Championships that were due to be held in October 2020. Unfortunately with the increased risks of COVID-19 and the additional costs associated with creating and operating a competition bubble would have put future editions of the Irish Para Badminton Open at risk. Once it became obvious that we could not gather the additional funds required to run this event with high COVID-19 restrictions in Ireland, the decision was made to cancel. The safety of all of our stakeholders is our main priority when organising these events and we believe that running this event within our budget would not have provided the standard of organisation that we would have deemed acceptable. Para Badminton is central in the long-term plans of Badminton Ireland and we have taken the decision that running this event to the standards that we believe would have been acceptable in 2021 would have risked Ireland’s involvement with the BWF circuit over the coming years.
The Irish Para Badminton Open will be back in 2022 and we look forward to welcoming the BWF circuit to Dublin.
Badminton Ireland would like to thank BWF and Sport Ireland in their efforts to support the Irish Para Badminton Open.
