Monday 14 October 2019
The Badminton Europe Para Badminton Coaching Course took place in Kiev Ukraine from the 4th-6th October with coaches in attendance from 9 National Federations. Patricia Gallagher, national Para squad coach alongside Leslie Dewart for 2019/2020 was the Irish representative in attendance, and she became the seventh Irish person to complete the course after Mark Phelan & Laura-Lee Jenkins (2015), Regina Scally & Eugene McVeigh (2016), and Craig McCourtney & Leslie Dewart (2017).
Tutors delivering at the event included the experienced Anton Ivanov and Kaity Hall, who were both extremely knowledgeable with the course material. There was an array of theoretical and practical components covered over the four days of the event with the course topics being;
- A Review of Level 1 Competencies/Coach Education Pathway
- Coaching Para-Badminton
- Coaching Badminton for those with an Intellectual Disability
- Badminton Coaching for the Deaf
- On-Court Activities
- Developing Progressive Practices
- Final Assessment
"The content covered was detailed, engaging, and informative, with attendees learning in great detail about coaching athletes across the various Para-Badminton Classifications (WH1, WH2, SL3, SL4, SU5, SS6). Practically engaging with on-court activities was a real means of enhancing the learning experience and of developing a greater understanding for the coaching needs of Para-Badminton players. I really look forward to applying the knowledge and qualifications I have gained back in Ireland. Moreover, I would like to give a special thank you to all that made this course so memorable. Badminton Ireland for their continued on-going support, Badminton Europe for organising such a detailed programme, Para Badminton Ukraine for providing talented players, and the Ukraine Badminton Federation for facilitating and hosting such a successful event".
