Ireland miss out on medal opportunities in some tough quarterfinals read more......

The first match of the day Nhat Nguyen and Paul Reynolds faced Mads Thorgensen and Paw Eriksen in a repeat of the European Junior under 17 semi-final match held in Lubin in 2016. Last time the Danish came out on top beating the Irish in three games, leaving the Irish with a bronze medal. This encounter was another thrilling match from start to finish, but the Irish got their revenge as they took the game winning two hard-fought games. This win set up a match against the tough English pairing of Callum Hemming and Max Flynn. The Irish started poorly in the match with the English dictating the game. The English controlled the opening game winning 21-10. Reynolds and Nguyen came out fighting in the second and held a two-point lead the whole way through the match to 20-18. Unfortunately the Irish were unable to finish either of the game point opportunities and the English held their nerve to take the victory and secure themselves a medal.

In the men’s singles quarterfinal, Nhat Nguyen faced number one seed Toma Popov Junior of France. Nguyen fought hard in this match, but Popov Junior who was awarded  Badminton Europe young player of the year for 2017 showed his class as he took the match in two games.

"It was a tough day for our players today. They played very well in their last 16 matches against tough opposition and gave themselves a great opportunity to medal. They will have learned a lot from this experience and hopefully, when these opportunities come around in the future this experience will help them to make the right decisions. We have a number of young players on the team who will have the opportunity to play this event again in 2018 and this week will have helped in their development. I look forward to working with these players again and I believe we will be fighting for medals again in the near future" Irish U19 coach Daniel Magee
